Earning a medical coding certification indicates to an employer that an applicant is competent in the foundational principals of medical coding. However, the certification exam method of vouching for a coder’s classroom level skills only gets coders and their employers halfway there.  It does not help employers who need transparency to a coder’s real-world competency in advance of the hire, and it doesn’t help certified coders to standout in the certified crowd.  The Certified Expert  Professional Fee Generalist (CEPFG) coder exam is used by employers to pre-screen coder applicants.  This assessment is also used by coders to determine how they might perform on a pre-hire coding assessment.
